Was Jesus the Archangel Michael?

The Jehovah Witnesses believe that Jesus was the archangel Michael.  In there magazine the Watchtower states “Michael, is the chief angel in terms of power and authority.  The scriptures clearly indicate that Michael is another name for Jesus Christ”  (N0 5, 2017, page 5).  The article refers to 1 Thessalonians 4 : 16 and Jude verse 9 as proof texts.

The Jehovah witnesses use their own version of the bible called the new world translation.  It is important to known that the New World translation was a work of anonymous work of a watchtower society committee.

1 Thessalonians 4 : 16 “because the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s+ voice and with God’s trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first” (New world translation)

This text indicates that the coming of the Lord will  be herald by an archangel’s voice not that the Lord is a archangel.

Jude 1 : 9 “But when Michael the archangel had a difference with the Devil and was disputing about Moses’ body,+ he did not dare to bring a judgement against him in abusive terms, but said: “May Jehovah rebuke you.” (new world translation)

In this passage the New World Translation changes “Lord rebuke you” (New King James Version) to “Jehovah rebuke you (New World Translation).  In fact the Watchtower changes the greek for Lord or God and renders it as Jehovah.  Jehovah is add to the New Testament 237 times with no textual authority for doing so.

Here you have Michael the archangel leaving the judgement of Satan to  God.  This is a vast difference to who Jesus responded to Satan in Mathew chapter 4.

Mathew 4 : 10 “Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” (New King James Version.

Neither of these scriptures indicate that Jesus was the archangel of Michael.  Hebrews chapter 1 indicates that Jesus is exalted even above the angels.   There is no scriptural support for this belief.

However the bible indicates that Jesus is Yahweh (God).

psalm 102:25-27  “long ago you laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish but you will remain just like a garment they will all wear out just like clothing you will replace them and they will pass away. But you are the same and your years will never end” (New World Translation)

This passage indicates that Jehovah (God, Yahweh) is unchanging and the creator of all things.

Hebrews 1:8-10But about the Son, he says: “God is your throne forever and ever, and the scepter of your Kingdom is the scepter of uprightness. You loved righteousness, and you hated lawlessness. That is why God, your God, anointed you with the oil of exultation more than your companions.” And: “At the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands” (New World Translation)

Here you have unique attributes assigned to the son Jesus that are assigned to Jehovah (Yahweh, God).

What is The Gospel

The word Gospel is made up of two old english words.   ‘god’ meaning ‘Good’ and ‘Spel’ meaning ‘news’.  So the word gospel itself means good news and we as Christians are commanded to proclaim this good news.

Mark 16 : 15 “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature ” (NKJV)

So what is the Good News that we are to proclaim.  Paul gives a summary of the gospel in his letter to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 15 : 1 – 6 “Moreover, brethren I declare to you the gospel, which i preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you – unless you believed in vain.  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received; that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he was seen by Cephas then by the Twelve.  After that he was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present.” (NKJV)

So we can sum up the good news of the gospel as Christ died for our sins, was buried and was raised on the third day.  However if you where to walk into the doctors office and the doctor said straight away here is a prescription take one 1 daily and you should be better would you trust that doctor and take the medicine.  However if the doctor took his time and said I have listened to you chest, checked your heart rate, blood pressure and have taken some blood samples.  All tests point towards a chest infection.  Please take this antibiotic daily and you should be better in a few days.  You are more then likely believe this doctor and take your medication.  Why? because the doctor took his time to diagnose the disease.  We know the disease is Sin and that Christ is the cure but we must take our time and proclaim the bad news first for the good news to be good news indeed.

The bible says that when God created the earth it was “very good” (Genesis 1:31).  Is the world we see today very good.  Although we can see good things in the world like natural wonders the world we see today isn’t very good.  150, 000 people die every day.  We have diseases such as cancer and various virus.

Did God call death, suffering and disease very good?

When God  created the world it was perfect no death, suffering or disease.  God created man in his own image and placed them into the garden.  God gave them just one commandment not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3).  Man disobeyed God and was a result death entered the world. (Romans 5 : 12)

We have inherited Adam’s and Eve’s disobedience.  Sin is the transgression of God’s holy law (1 John 3 : 4).  I think we can all say that we have told a lie at some point in our lives (Exodus 20 : 16), even stolen something regardless of value ( exodus 20: 15).  One of God’s commandments says do not murder (exodus 20: 13)  but Jesus said if we just get angry at someone then we have already murdered them in our hearts (Mathew 5: 22).

So we have violated God’s law and if God was to give us justice because he is a holy and justice God then we would deserve hell.  Hell is God’s prison where there is no parole and last for eternity.

However God doesn’t want to send us to hell.  God himself came down in the form of Jesus of Nazareth.  The God man.  The perfect man, who kept all the commandments and died a terrible death on a cross.  Jesus took the punishment for our transgressions.  We violated God’s law and Jesus paid our fine so that God can legally dismiss our case.  But Jesus didn’t stay dead.  He resurrected from the dead, defeating death and ascended into heaven.  If we repent (turn around) and put our trust in him and him alone then God will grant us the free gift of everlasting life (John 3: 16).
